Batman, The Joker, Vagrant Story, The Pirates of Dark Water fandom asylums [Nov. 7th, 2009|04:14 am]

[mood | full]

[info]octopon - Pirates of DarkWater fandom asylum. Completed!

[info]gotham_gazetteCompleted!</i>

[info]vagrant_story - Vagrant Story fandom asylum. WIP; will be deleted unless more interest is shown.

And,

Please feel free to join [info]commedia; a personal project of mine, aiming to review and analyze comics (and other selected media) that feature DC Comics' The Joker.

It is currently a WIP because I am still going through my 500+ hardcopy!issues collection. I do not download torrents/scans.

I'd like to point out that currently I have two polls up for debate, as can be seen here explaining two routes the asylum's project can take. IE: spoiler free reviews, spoilerific reviews, and whatnot. =) Otherwise, the FAQ and The Rules are already up. The tags/memory post is still a WIP.

I am also open to affiliating with other comic book and/or Batman related asylums, except for RPGs.

Chugging right along. I'll have some making up to do this weekend. Saturday I'm teaching my second bookbinding class. Pamphlet and Chap book this time.

And a later class is going to be aimed at artists.

I have bought two or three watercolor journals and given them all away. I like hot press paper 140lb because I use a combination of pencil, stick and pan colors and the pencils don't work well on cold press, let's not even talk about rough. So I wound up making my own. I'm going to teach a class on making your own journal book.

If an English speaking child of five or six was taken to Russia, spoke both Russian and English there after, with more Russian than English, would they have a Russian accent?

Paso Doble to Joan Jett/Hate Myself For Loving You? Not even.

Who the hell picks the damn music? What are they thinking? And how do I strangle them?

There are certain dances that should be danced to traditional music for a reason!!!

Just saying.

Hi There. [Nov. 2nd, 2009|05:31 pm]

Hello all,

What a year it's been. All I can seem to think to say is, 'Wow'. Some of these most extraordinary things have happened and I'm not even sure where to begin. It's all happened so fast and the only thing I've realized is how out of touch with things I've become.

Oh, not that I'm old and it's one of those generational gap things, not at all. I'm just...I'm not sure how I can explain it. People in the world today are so different in their views, they seem to think that everything happening is new or some how unique. Bad guys getting away with the loot, politicians acting like children, world gone mad, freedoms being experienced for the very first time, it's all so much to take in.

It's little wonder we're starting to question, well, everything. The saying goes, I think, 'these are the times that try men's souls'. I don't know about men's, but mine is sure feeling a little used. See, I made a little joke. It's what some people do when they're nervous and not quite sure what to say. Guess it just helps to have someone to say it to.

Do you need someone to talk to? I've got a free ear and some cheese cake.

Thanks for listening,
Rose Nylund, [info]ask_rose

[info]fanowrimo

A fan fiction writers Nanowrimo in December!

When the crazy of Nano just isn't enough LOL XD

No, seriously, this is a comm where, for the month of December, you work on those fanfics that have been sitting on ff.net, or your desktop (or wherever) for eons that still need to be finished, that you keep meaning to get to, but never have due to writers block, life, etc.

Or, if you have signed up for one of those nifty prompt tables, and never got around to doing anything with them...

Then December is the month to get these fics done :D

So stop by, introduce yourself, pledge to breathe new life into those dusty old unfinished fics :D

I broke a glass cup while I was making breakfast. Not a big deal, in one way, as the cup was cheap. But, no one wears shoes in the house, so ... here I am, barefooted in the middle of a scattering of glass. Not so good. So I yell, "Honey, put your shoes on, I broke a cup." He doesn't even ask, just puts on his shoes, comes and gets me, carries me out of the glass and goes to take his shoes off again. Tole? A kiss, of course. *hugs him* My hero!

Dear tin maker.

A #5 tin should not only hold a five pound bag of flour but keep it inside. A tight fitting lid is one which stays on. It should have to be pried off by main force. It should stay on even if the tin is picked up by the lid by an unsuspecting husband.

Flour on the floor instead of in the tin is not what is expected or desired. Asshats! Tight fitting traditional lid my fanny!!

No love, me! *blert*

*goes to help clean up flour*

Top 10 Bowie Songs [Oct. 29th, 2009|12:01 pm]

Top 10 Bowie Songs:

These are my personal favorites, not which songs I think are “objectively best.” Sort of in order, but some are too close to call.

1. Station to Station
This song is dark, beautiful, complex, innovative, and disturbing. Its enveloping atmosphere and progression of emotions captures a sense of the search for life’s meaning, the fear of emptiness and hope for transcendence.

2. Ziggy Stardust
The perfect archetypal rock song for the perfect archetypal rock star.

3. Subterraneans
So beautiful, longing, and sad. Bowie’s a master at capturing this particular emotion; “Subterraneans” is the best example, although…

4. The Bewlay Brothers
Even the Bowie encyclopedia doesn’t seem to quite know what to make of this song’s enigmatic lyrics. Whatever it’s about, the vivid imagery and haunting music are eerie and sad, steeped in a nostalgia for something deeply precious and irrevocably lost. (Plus, Bowie deserves major props for turning that chipmunk vocal effect last seen in “The Laughing Gnome” into something effectively ominous here.)

5. “Heroes”
Specific and universal, ironic and yet deeply moving–”Heroes” is an epic contradiction of a song. (I already raved about it here.)

6. Always Crashing in the Same Car
So much emotion brews beneath the cool surface of this song. It is a mood, a musical landscape of numb disconnection.

7. Alternative Candidate
I can’t believe this jaunty and twisted outtake wasn’t even on the album!

8. Cygnet Committee
Perhaps a bit over the top, but I love the sincerity of this folk epic. Bowie’s impassioned criticism of the corruption of 1960s ideals is a reminder of the substance beneath his style.

9. My Death (July 3, 1973 live version)
This isn’t even a Bowie song, but it ranks in my top ten for the quality of the performance alone.

10. The Man Who Sold the World
Thanks to Nirvana, I grew up with this song; I still adore Kurt Cobain’s raw vocal performance. Bowie’s original is equally sad, with a detached performance that gives its emotion a more distant quality. The lyrics are among his early best.

(Runners up: Life on Mars?, Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Rock N Roll Suicide, Aladdin Sane, Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing, Big Brother, Young Americans, Who Can I Be Now, Stay, Wild is the Wind, A New Career in a New Town, Neukoln, Ashes to Ashes, Ricochet, Loving the Alien, Jump They Say, Outside, I’m Afraid of Americans)

I know my descriptions tend to linger on the angsty aspects of the songs, but a lot what makes them so effective is Bowie’s irony, self-awareness, and sense of the absurd.
